The formation of an academic health department between the University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences (SPHIS) and the Louisville Metro Health Department (LMHD) has opened opportunities in health for the residents of the city of Louisville.

As strategic partners for the public's health, SPHIS and LMHD share numerous levels of interest, from healthier, safer environments to a physically fit workforce and beyond. This presentation will aim to highlight implementation strategies on developing an academic health department, forming an agenda conducive to collaboration and building a city that seeks to better the public's health.

Learning Objectives:

At the close of the presentation, participants will be able to

1—See how academia and government can work together to advance common interests;
2—Understand the importance of developing strategic relationships in attaining health for a community; and
3—Examine elements necessary for reproduction in other mid-sized, metropolitan cities with schools of public health and local health departments.
