President Bush has proposed an overhaul of Social Security. "Among those who have expressed qualms is Rep. Bill Thomas, R-CA, who is Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. Mr. Thomas suggested that a system of private accounts could probably not win Congressional approval by itself. He argued for a wider debate that included tax policy and long term health care for the elderly" (NY Times, p. A12, 1-26-05). This symposium will review the experience of Japan, Holland and England with publicly financed pensions and LTC. There will also be a review of a HCFA/CMS Demonstration that included a Medicare financed long term care benefit. A member of Chairman Thomas's staff will be invited to discuss the Chairman's proposal. A summary and discussion will precede Q&A from the audience.
