Abstract #111934

Bridging the Gap between Research and Policy: Exploring the Link of Health Disparities Legislation and Research through a Database System

Tarsha McCrae, MPH, CHES, Tisha Fowler, MSW, Leslie C. Cooper, RN, PhD, and Barbara Wingrove, MPH. Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities, National Cancer Institute, 6116 Executive Boulevard, Suite 602, Bethesda, MD 20892, 301-435-9211, mccraet@mail.nih.gov

The Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD)'s Health Policy Branch (HPB) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is committed to eliminating cancer health disparities by promoting and supporting research that influences health policies to address the issues of the unequal burden of cancer. To meet this mission, the HPB has developed a dynamic database to serve as a tool to link cancer health disparities research programs and related state and federal policies. This tool provides data on policies as they relate to cancer health disparities and incorporates existing health disparities initiatives from NCI and NCI collaborators. This presentation will feature the database capabilities, current cancer health disparity policies, mapping of disparities statistics and evidence-based findings that have been found effective in removing barriers for individuals across the cancer care continuum in geographic areas of excess cancer mortality. Furthermore, the presenters will provide “best practices” on how researchers, advocates and other audiences can effectively use this information as a tool for tracking and analyzing policies and programs to reduce cancer health disparities. As resources remain limited, increased awareness and dissemination of evidence-based research to policy makers will be critical to the decision making process. Combining approaches across related areas into one source is essential in bridging the gap between the identification of effective interventions and their dissemination to disparate populations suffering from cancer.
