Peter Byrd, Public Health, Mental Health HIV Services Collaborative, 6266 Dorsett Shoals Rd # 206, Douglasville, GA 30135, 770-949-6941, peterbyrd51@aol.com and Chamberlain Diala, MPH, PhD, Public Health, Abt Associates, 4550 Montgomery Ave, Bethesda, MD 20814.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services funded the Mental Health HIV Services Collaborative in 2001. The program was designed to support the provision of mental health services to HIV-positive individuals in minority communities in 20 different sites across the country. This program emphasizes consumer involvement with centralized national committee that contributes to all phases of program implementation.

Learning Objectives: The primary learning objectives of these presentations are:

· To provide mental health clinicians an expanded perception of the roles of consumers and their families in mental health services delivery. · To suggest tools that elicit input from consumers and families receiving mental health services. · To provide guidelines and procedures to maximize consumer participation through insight to the values of importance to program development and services delivery.

Clinicians are in constant state of developing programs to serve the mentally ill. Consumers, on the Advisory Boards for a national demonstration program, will share lessons learned, best practices and challenges for program directors to work with consumers in new and substantive ways.

Discussion: Who is eligible to serve on the Consumer Advisory Board (CAB)? What are the benefits of ongoing training for participants? Working with consumer participants with multiple diagnoses?
