Tobacco-related research has been, and will continue to be, a key weapon in the battle against tobacco use and the tobacco industry tactics. Yet, given the importance of research in tobacco control, in most cases, there is no existing conduit for the research findings published in the scientific literature to be “translated” and disseminated among tobacco control professionals and the larger public health community. In California, the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP) has been the leader in funding scientifically sound tobacco-related research that is vital for tobacco control efforts. TRDRP has created the Tobacco Research Translation Institute (TRTI) as a conduit to facilitate the translation of research for public health application. The TRTI brings together tobacco control professionals and scientists conducting tobacco related research in order to facilitate the application of empirically validated findings to the efforts of tobacco control.
This paper will present how the design and implementation of the TRTI curriculum maximized the understanding and potential applicability to tobacco control efforts of empirically validated research findings in the areas of reproductive health effects associated with tobacco-use, and in understanding the science behind exposure to and measurement of second hand smoke constituents. The presentation will provide data from the TRTI evaluation. In addition, lessons learned and future plans for the TRTI will be discussed.
