Abstract #112603

A transdisciplinary approach to career development and training of health disparities researchers

Brian Rivers, PhD, MPH, B. Lee Green, PhD, Kyrel L. Rowell, MPH, Daphne C. Watkins, BA, Desiree Rivers, MSPH, and Maribel Robledo, BA. Texas A&M University, Center for the Study of Health Disparities, 112 Harrington Tower, TAMU 4222, College Station, TX 77843, 979-845-3482, brivers@tamu.edu

Healthy People 2010 identifies the elimination of health disparities as one of its two overarching goals. However, for the elimination of health disparities to become a reality, an increase in the number of culturally competent researchers, practitioners, and health care providers must occur. Therefore, the Center for the Study of Health Disparities (CSHD) has embarked upon a major initiative: the development of new research scientists for careers in health disparities. The Career Development and Training Core (CDTC), one of the four prongs of the CSHD EXPORT center, was established to serve as a catalyst for producing high quality health disparities researchers. Its multi-tiered design includes: (1) recruiting masters and doctoral level students whose research area is health disparities; (2) providing these students with various career and professional development opportunities to enhance their research skills; (3) recruiting and training new faculty interested in health disparities research; and (4) encouraging and facilitating a transdisciplinary approach to health disparities. The Research Seminar Series and the Journal Club were developed as mechanisms to supplement the overarching design. Both components focus on utilizing multidisciplinary health promotion and disease prevention strategies to eliminate health disparities. Impact evaluation findings of the activities in this core will be presented.
