The quality of the reporting methods and categorization of this data, however, have come under scrutiny during recent years. There have been several analyses of the variables race and ethnicity in public health research and other health science literature conducted through literature reviews. There is a lack of analysis, however, of these variables in public health nursing literature relative to the pediatric population. The objective of this descriptive study is to examine the variables race and ethnicity in pediatric focused public health nursing research literature.Original public health nursing research with a pediatric focus published between 1999 and 2004 will be reviewed. The content of the articles will be analyzed to evaluate the definitions of the variables race and ethnicity, the context of the use of race and ethnicity in the study, data sources and the researchers' rationale for the categorization of race and ethnicity. The findings of this study are anticipated to impact public health nursing program planning and research relative to the pediatric population.
