A project funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research has resulted in the development of exercise protocols for people with mobility limitations (PWML) to decrease secondary conditions and increase overall community participation. The exercise protocols are being offered to people with mobility impairments at the Enabling Mobility Center (EMC), which is part of an independent living center (Paraquad). Individuals select a 12-week exercise program at the EMC, or a 12 week home exercise program or no exercise program. PWML complete a community participation survey and establish baseline capacities at initial, three month and six months assessments. The Community Participation and Perceived Receptivity Survey (CPPRS) was designed to assess community participation and includes frequency of visiting community sites (e.g., hospitals, durable medical supply stores, grocery stores, restaurants, etc.), choice, satisfaction and importance of visiting these sites and questions on the influence that environmental features and attitudes of people without mobility limitations have on their participation. This presentation will include exercise protocols, video clips and descriptions the equipment used by users of power wheelchairs, manual wheelchairs, scooters or canes/crutches/walkers. The community participation measurement instrument (CPPRS) will be described and demonstrated using a web version.
