There is a well-recognized need to enhance the education of the medical community about the public health system and issues, preparedness and the role of physicians in all aspects of public health. This engagement is vital to improve workforce and strengthen public health practice. At present there are limited opportunities for the academic medical and public health practice communities to work together on educational agendas and for trainees (medical students and residents) to benefit from experiential learning in public health. This presentation describes and discusses a unique project supported by the AAMC-CDC Cooperative Agreement. Seven medical school-public health practice partnerships received seed money to support the establishment of “centers” for public health education that provided an opportunity to work together on educational agendas for medical students at all levels. Products and outcomes of this activity included the development of a certificate program, case based learning modules, structured site visits as well as longitudinal public health projects. Areas of focus included Healthy People 2010 objectives, public health infrastructure and enhancing preparedness to respond in times of crisis. Currently, the educational focus is on medical students with an expectation that the infrastructure established will provide a foundation for future focus on resident and practitioner education. Learning objectives: Describe the characteristics of collaborations established through regional medicine-public health education centers (RMPHECs) Review examples of the RMPHEC products and outcomes Discuss barriers and facilitators for academic medicine-public health collaborations Articulate how this model can be extended in the public health and medical communities
