A frequently cited barrier to faculty conducting community-based participatory research, practice-based teaching or service-learning and other forms of community-engaged scholarship is the risk associated with trying to achieve promotion and tenure. Community-engaged scholarship poses significant challenges to traditional definitions of scholarship and is not often supported by the promotion and tenure process. Thus, it is essential that faculty engage in a planning process to develop and implement their vision for community-engaged scholarship for the five to seven years prior to promotion.

This presentation describes an innovative nationally peer-reviewed, online toolkit developed from an educational project involving interviews with faculty and relevant literature that supports faculty in their preparation for promotion and tenure. We will present key strategies and resources faculty can use in planning for promotion and tenure, including the need to and benefits of articulating a professional vision for one's work, effectively work with mentors both at one's institution and in other settings, and documenting and highlighting one's community-engaged scholarship throughout the pre-promotion period.

We have designed the online toolkit to be flexible so that we can continuously update and improve it, including regular involvement of national experts and ongoing evaluation. We will present year one of our evaluation findings, focused on it's usability and applicability for faculty planning for promotion and tenure. The toolkit is supported by grants from the WK Kellogg Foundation and the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education in the US Department of Education.
