BACKGROUND: Heterogeneity on reporting physical activity between seasons is a normal concern in epidemiological studies when the aim is obtain information representing the usual activity. OBJECTIVE: Yearly variation on self-report physical activity behaviours of Porto adults. METHODS: A random digit dialling sample of 520 participants of EpiPorto study in 2002-2003, habitants of Porto (187 males and 333 females) aged 18-92 years, was evaluated using a structured questionnaire reporting social, demographic and anthropometric characteristics. Physical activity was assessed using a questionnaire designed to estimate usual individual daily energy expenditure, detailing the intensity, duration and frequency of sleeping hours, professional, domestic and leisure-time activities during the previous year, and was quantified as metabolic equivalent per hour (MET-hours/day). Trigonometric linear models, separately by gender, were used to estimate the amplitude (A) in reporting activity during the different days of the year. RESULTS: In both genders, after adjustment for age, body mass index and education, no significant yearly variation was found for total physical activity or for the different types of activities evaluated, except for leisure time activities in males (A=2.11, p=0.013). The higher amplitude variation was found for occupational activities in males (A=5.30, p=0.301). For total physical activity, a higher variation was found for males (A=3.96, p=0.164) than for females (A=0.82, p=0.523) and the variation coefficient (amplitude/median value) represented 11.0% in males and only 2.34% in females. CONCLUSION: These data suggest no different yearly variation on reporting usual physical activity with the exception of leisure time activities, which need to be considered carefully.
