The 7-Day Physical Activity Record (PAR) was used to collect retrospective data from Deaf adults in a study to test the Deaf Heart Health Intervention. Participants had difficulty remembering their physical activities in the prior week and data collection was expensive and time-consuming. Protocols were changed to elicit exercise habits prospectively with take-home exercise diaries. Data quality was improved but still not satisfactory. A colorful calendar format was created for prospective data collection and instructions on how to use the PAR calendar were translated into sign language on videotape. Participants were given a copy of the VT to review as needed at home during the week of data collection with the new calendar. This strategy has been pilot tested with a small sample of Deaf adults with favorable results. This newest protocol will be used in future studies of physical activity and exercise among Deaf adults.
