Abstract #114867

Heavy (metal) lifting: State efforts to reduce mercury exposure

Glen Andersen, MSPH, National Conference of State Legislatures, 7700 East First Place, Denver, CO 80230, 303-856-1341, glen.andersen@ncsl.org

State mercury reduction efforts have been gaining momentum, propelled by an increasing number of warnings about mercury-contaminated fish and the threat that the heavy metal poses to children's health. Many state policymakers are concerned about mercury's effect on both public health and commerce, and are taking action. This session will explore state activities to reduce mercury exposure and investigate how proposed changes to the Clean Air Act might affect these efforts.
