Environmental Justice and Nurse Managed Health Centers: impact of increasing caregiver knowledge on prevention of lead poisoning and managing asthma in children
A pre-test, intervention, post-test design provided for the evaluation of interventions by community outreach staff. Using a standardized curriculum, outreach staff provided interventions for pregnant mothers and mothers with children under one year of age for lead poisoning prevention and caregivers of pediatric primary care clients with asthma being cared for in nurse-managed centers serving vulnerable populations. The concepts studied included knowledge, environmental assessments, blood lead levels, triggers, emergency room visits and hospital stays. There have been statistically significant improvements in knowledge of lead poisoning prevention and asthma and clinically significant decreases in blood lead levels, common triggers in homes and bedrooms and in emergency room use and overnight hospital stays.
