Abstract #115427

Reinventing the DrPH program: Models for developing practice based leaders—a case study of the University of Pittsburgh

Jeanette M. Trauth, PhD, Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh, 130 DeSoto Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15261, 412-624-0968, trauth@pitt.edu and Patricia I. Documét, MD, DrPH, Applied Research Department, Family Health Council, Inc., 960 Penn Avenue, Suite 600, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

This presentation will describe the redesign of the DrPH program in the Department of Behavioral & Community Health Sciences at the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh, and discuss the issues encountered during implementation. The Department came into existence in early 2002 (having formerly been a division of a health services administration department) and since then has developed a comprehensive process for doctoral student recruitment, admission, orientation, coursework, exams, mentoring/advising, the completion of the dissertation and professional development. In addition, the Department has revised its curriculum at the masters level and is now beginning to revise its doctoral course offerings to reflect the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine's 2003 report on Educating Public Health Professionals for the 21st century. Issues of individual and organizational changes are highlighted.
