Abortion (spontaneous or induced) constitutes a public health problem in Egypt. One in five admissions to all Ob/Gyn wards is for treatment of abortion complications. Effective linkage between postabortion care services and family planning (FP) is essential to reducing the incidence of repeat unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortion. The present study assesses feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness of providing family planning (FP) counseling to postabortion patients before discharge from the hospital. The study is conducted in six Egyptian MOHP hospitals, where postabortion patients will receive improved medical care, FP counseling, along with an FP brochure. Patients who are interested will be referred to a clinic nearest to their residence to receive a FP method. Interviews will be conducted with physicians and nurses who work on the Ob/Gyn ward to assess feasibility and acceptability of the intervention. Moreover, a sample of 215 uncomplicated postabortion patients with < 12 weeks gestation will be interviewed before discharge from the hospital to solicit their views about the intervention and four weeks later to measure contraceptive use. Results of the study are expected in August 2005. The study is a collaborative activity between the Population Council FRONTIERS Program and TAHSEEN / Catalyst Project
