This presentation will describe employee health surveillance and epidemiology studies conducted in a large petroleum company. A major activity is maintaining a health status registry that tracks mortality and work history information and allows periodic mortality surveillance studies. Another is surveillance of health clinic visits in remote work sites. The benefits of proactive surveillance will be discussed. Other activities include focused epidemiology studies that may be needed to address specific health concerns. Depending on the circumstances, choices of methodology for focused studies include cancer incidence, nested case-control or surveys. The presentation will conclude with discussion of the challenges of effectively tracking and studying health risks in large employee populations.
