Objective: To determine the association between community social capital (CSC) and smoking cessation.
Data Sources: 2000 National Health Interview Survey, 2000 American Chamber of Commerce Researchers Association (ACCRA) Cost of Living Reports, 1999 County Business Patterns, the Office on Smoking and Health, Centers for Disease Control, and the American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation.
Study Design: We estimate two separate logit models of smoking cessation. The first estimates the association of CSC with successful smoking cessation and controls for cigarettes prices, the potential effects of smuggling on cigarette prices, family income, workplace and restaurant nonsmoking regulations, sex, age, race/ethnicity, education, number of past years smoking, and number of past unsuccessful attempts at smoking cessation. The second estimates the association of CSC with current unsuccessful attempts at smoking cessation and controls for the same set of factors as above.
