As a part of a larger project, the New Minority Male Health Disparities Consortium lead by Shivers Institute at Morehouse College, a pilot project was implemented in Baltimore by the Morgan State University Public Health Program's Center for HIV Prevention, Evaluation, Policy and Research. The goal was to engage hard-to-reach young African American males and provide health education programs to reduce the spread and prevalence of HIV/AIDS in this population. As a part of this pilot program, a three-part 24 item questionnaire was designed with a focus on those factors that are threatening the survival of young black men, particularly in urban communities. The survey results and methodology will be discussed here. An important objective of the survey was to evaluate participants' basic knowledge, attitudes and behaviors related to HIV/AIDS and common causes of death within Baltimore City. Generally, the survey results demonstrate that respondents have considerable knowledge about the processes and risks for HIV transmission, spread and prevention but knowledge of risk did not necessarily translate into behavior modification . The survey results also indicate that further inquiry is necessary, in collaboration with community stakeholders, to identify what menu of services and intervention will be appropriate for the youth to take their knowledge and apply it to their behavior.
