Mic check! Getting heard in communities of color: Media advocacy that works

All community advocates will benefit from the innovative and successful approaches to media advocacy discussed by the panel participants. Communities of color are often missed when organizations deliver messages through mainstream vehicles. Historically, communities of color are not afforded the financial resources to get their messages heard by the masses. Thus, broadcasting messages through print, radio, and television mediums offer opportunities to maximize resources and magnify their impact. Panel participants will present examples of how their communities have used these channels to get their messages out including advertising spoofs, talk radio, public service announcements, celebrity endorsements, and cable access television. Key Points: 1. Media advocacy is a useful and necessary approach to advocating for policy change. 2. There are various ways to broadcast your message Educational Experience: Workshop participants will be inspired by the innovative and successful approaches to media advocacy taken by the panelists. They will leave the session with new strategies for “getting heard” in their communities. Benefits: Presenters will provide first-hand testimonies on how media advocacy has created change in their communities. Participants will leave the session inspired and prepared to be heard in their communities.
