The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) joined in partnership in 2001 to bring the Salud para su Corazon (SPSC) program, translated as Health for Your Heart to the U.S. Mexico Border Region. The SPSC program promotes healthy behaviors that reduce the risk of cardio- vascular diseases by raising awareness and transforming attitudes about cardiovascular health. The expansion of the program to community health centers facilitates the opportunity to connect the primary health clinics to the SPSC outreach strategy driven by promotores(lay health workers) to provide information about prevention of the risk factors that predispose to cardiovascular diseases and to encourage behaviors that result in better clinical outcomes.
