Abstract #119787

Water fluoridation at 60: Perspectives on progress and future directions

Scott M. Presson, DDS, MPH, Division of Oral Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4770 Buford Hwy, MS F-10, Atlanta, GA 30341, 770-488-6056, skp4@cdc.gov

2005 marks the 60th year of community water fluoridation, recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1999 as one of ten great public health achievements of the 20th century. This public health intervention continues to safely and effectively reduce dental caries prevalence and severity. Results from the 2004 National Fluoridation Report will be presented, including status of progress in reaching the Healthy People 2010 objective and state-specific coverage. The status of implementation of the Water Fluoridation Reporting System will be reviewed. Implications of recent study results, including the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, will be discussed. Recommendations for future efforts in expanding fluoridation to additional U.S. cities and maintaining high-quality fluoridation programs will be described.
