Abstract #120175

Men’s hands off women prisoners

Corey Weinstein, MD, California Prison Focus, 1199 Sanchez, San Francisco, CA 94114, 415-333-8228, coreman@igc.org

One of the ways that the US is out of compliance with the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights is in its treatment of women prisoners. Recent legal challenges and public campaigns have moved to change basic routines common in prisons for women that violate human rights. A recent US Circuit Court decision presents an important opportunity to finally protect women prisoners from sexual abuse by removing male custodial staff from posts in any housing unit. Any campaign for basic human rights should raise issues of the need for gender specific procedures and programs for women's special needs including family reunification and drug mental health treatment.
