Abstract #120515

Epidemiologic evidence of the carcinogenicity of Dioxin

Richard Clapp, MPH, DSc, Boston University School of Public Health, 715 Albany St., Talbot Bldg. E232, Boston, MA 02118, 617-683-4620, rclapp@bu.edu

In the past five years, since the draft EPA Dioxin Reassessment was released, additional studies of populations exposed to dioxin and dioxin-like compounds have been published. For example, Akhtar, et al (2003, 2004) have updated cancer incidence in U.S. Air Force Ranch Hand veterans. These studies have shown increased risk for all sites combined and several individual types of cancer. In addition, Steenland, et al., (2004) have summarized and updated information on occupational and environmental cohorts analyzed previously and concludes that the evidence for carcinogenicity has been strengthened. Misinterpretations of the Vietnam veterans risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma continue to be published. Examples of recent studies and an overview of the current status of the epidemiologic evidence will be presented.
