Abstract #121134

American Nurses Association's partnership with the Tobacco Free Nurses initiative

Pamela C. Hagan, MSN, RN, Chief Programs Officer, American Nurses Association, 8515 Georgia Ave., Suite 400, Silver Spring, MD 20910-3492, 301-628-5059, phagan@ana.org

The American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's 2.7 million registered nurses (RNs) through its 54 constituent member associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public. In the past 3 years, the ANA, together with the American Nurses Foundation, has become a partner of the Tobacco Free Nurses Initiative, increasing ANA's previous involvement in tobacco control. This presentation will discuss how a national professional organization has incorporate tobacco control as a main agenda issue and what steps it has taken to assist nurses in enhancing their participation and their role in tobacco control. For example, ANA has revised its position statement on tobacco, has featured tobacco in many of its publications and meetings, and has created an organization-wide committee to ensure sustainability of its tobacco control efforts. Other initiatives will also be presented.
