Although the US Armed Forces instituted tobacco control policies during the 1980's, smoking in the military was normative for much of the 20th century. In addition, many recruits come from families where smoking is normative. This presentation will provide an in-depth description of the military tobacco user, including his or her product preference, and an overview of military tobacco control policy and how it is enforced, both in the continental United States and abroad. However, the military's two-decade long tobacco successes are currently at risk: After many years of decreased prevalence that mirrored the civilian population, tobacco use in some military branches has recently remained static and, in other branches it has increased. Possible explanations for this will be discussed.
