Abstract #121665

Evidence-based practices in mental health treatment: Looking forward from an historical perspective

Michael J. Stoil, PhD, Manila Consulting – NREPP Team, 5772D Rexford Court, Springfield, VA 22152, 703-448-2300 X306, mjstoil@ioip.com

The presentation will explain the evolution of evidence-based approaches in mental health treatment, focusing on psychotherapy. Managed behavioral health care––largely a response to concerns about the cost and effectiveness of open-ended, unstructured therapy––and public sector demands for accountability became driving forces for evidence-based practice in the 1990s. The consumer movement, championed in part by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), added new expectations to the definition of “evidence-based.” The presentation will discuss barriers to meeting these new expectations as well as how SAMHSA's development of databases for evidence-based practices in mental health represents an increasingly systematic approach to meeting evidence-based standards for mental health treatment.
