Effective and sound public health policy requires an open deliberative process to ensure a thoughtful balance among scientific evidence, politics and values. A lack of deliberation and the disruption of balance result in the misuse of science and lead to outcomes that serve private rather than public interests. This presentation will examine these relationships within the three branches of government, using the regulation of workplace ergonomics as one example. Suggestions for strengthening scientific integrity in public health policy will be presented.
