Abstract #121898

Economic consequences of health in high income countries

Marc Suhrcke, PhD, European Office for Investment for Health & Development, World Health Organization, Campo Santo Stefano, San Marco 2847, I - 30124 Venice, Italy, +39 041 279 3887, msu@ihd.euro.who.int and David Stuckler, MPH(c), School of Public Health, Yale University, 367 Cedar Street Box 401A, New Haven, CT 06510.

It is generally argued that investment in health contributes positively to the economic health of a country. Using European countries as examples, this presentation asks to what extent this view can also be applied to high-income countries and whether the health improvements come from preventive efforts or from improved treatment.
