Abstract #122027

Recognizing Healthy Communities- Environmentally and Physically Fit for Older Adults

Kathy Sykes, MPA, Office of Children's Health Protection, US Environmental Protection Agency, 1200 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Mail Code 1107A, Room 2512N (Ariel Rios North), Washington, DC 20460, 202 564 3651, sykes.kathy@epamail.epa.gov

The EPA, CDC and the President's Fitness Council, as well as the National Blueprint Office and the National Council on the Aging, are joining forces to create a recognition program for communities that promote health and well-being of older adults through environmental and physical activity efforts. This planned recognition program, while still in the planning stages, will encourage communities to take an ecological approach -- bridging sector boundaries to involve policy makers, community leaders, community and environmental organizations, land-use planners, etc., in making communities a healthy place for older adults to live. A secondary goal of the program is to create a learning network where communities would learn by example from active living programs and the successful incorporation of smart growth principles that build healthy communities.
