To assure that globalization of trade and commerce provides benefits across the board it is important to assure that, along with such efforts attention is paid to prevention of adverse environmental side effects. Along with increased development, and trade of chemicals, is the potential for increased pollution. The CEC provides an opportunity to address such concerns. In so doing we need to protect the most vulnerable in our three nations: the poor, minority communities including indigenous populations, the elderly, and, most critically, our children. Children are often more vulnerable to risks of environmental hazards and we have the responsibility to assure their health and safety today, as well as their future right to a healthy environment.
