Abstract #122033

Industry engagement in assessing and addressing children's environmental health challenges in North America

Daniel Goldstein, Medical Toxicology, Monsanto Company, 100 Place, Baltimore, MD 99999, 999-999-9999, daniel.a.goldstein@monsanto.com

Industry plays a key role in chemicals management issues and is an important stakeholder in the trilateral activities of the CEC. Over the last several decades, industry has supported data collection and research on the general human health and environmental effects of chemicals and has helped to investigate effects on children. However, challenges remain in refining data collection tools and assessment methodologies to provide useful measures of children's exposures and health outcomes. Child health efforts to date have generally focused on the use of existing data sets, such as toxic release data. These data were originally assembled for purposes other than child health research and are, not surprisingly, sub-optimal resources for the task at hand. Building consensus among researchers, regulatory officials, industry and other non-governmental organizations on needed assessment tools and methodologies will advance efforts to assess the role of environmental chemical exposure in child health. The sharing of expertise across borders and involvement of industry in future regional health and environmental initiatives is strongly encouraged.
