The purpose of this session is to increase awareness and knowledge of the critical need for testing support for antiretroviral treatment and quality practices to assure effective treatment of HIV/AIDS patients. With the recognition of the value of ART, and the increased initiatives, e.g., PEPFAR, available for treatment programs, the rapid scale-up in treatment programs brings both hope for health improvements, but also a grave risk of harm if ART is not implemented effectively. Quality laboratory practices and accurate testing resources are essential to success in this endeavor.
Learning Objectives: Participants in this session will learn the test methods used for monitoring ART, the rationale for selecting different methods and the advantages and disadvantages of testing strategies. At the end of the session, participants will be able to recognize important factors in providing ART testing support, prioritize testing resources and articulate issues related to providing testing in resource-poor settings.
