The members of the Women's Caucus are committed to supporting the preservation and improvement of the health and well being of ALL women, including women who are part of the community justice system and living in prison. Many women in the community justice system and prison have been victims of interpersonal and other violence and abuse. It is imperative that efforts are made to understand the circumstances of these women's lives so that appropriate public health interventions can be developed and provided to them. This session will include presentations focused on past abuse and violence, HIV risk, mental health, and cervical cancer screening.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, the participant will be able to (1) understand the importance of preserving and improving the health of women in the community justice system and prison; (2) describe unique circumstances of women living in these settings; (3) explain the need for appropriate public health interventions for these women; (4) discuss the role of past abuse and violence as a precursor to life in the community justice system and prison; and (5) identify strategies for improving the health and well being of these women.
