Session: Exposure Assessment And Compromised Air Quality
4218.0: Tuesday, December 13, 2005: 2:30 PM-4:00 PM
Oral
Exposure Assessment And Compromised Air Quality
Poor air quality is a significant public health issue. This session features a range of studies that have used various methods to monitor and assess the human health impact of poor air quality as well as research predictors of air contaminant levels. We will hear about innovative research to examine home exposure to pesticides and persistent organic pollutants (POPs); determine ammonia levels to develop a spatial model of atmospheric NH3 levels near CAFOs and human populations; determine the prevalence of bacteria and fungi in schools through descriptive and analytical data collection analyzes; and evaluate household dust levels and their impact on children living near intense agriculture.
Learning Objectives: 1. Describe purpose, methods, and results of four studies conducted to examine home exposure to pesticides and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), ammonia levels near CAFOs and human populations, prevalence of bacteria and fungi in schools and household dust near intense agriculture. 2. Identify assessment mechanisms to measure impacts of various toxicants, including ammonia, phthalates, POPs and particulate matter on indoor and outdoor air quality. 3. Articulate the use of appropriate assessment models in minimizing and protecting environmental public health.
