eHealth is the use of emerging information and communication technology, especially the Internet, to improve or enable health and health care. There is emerging evidence that eHealth tools may contribute to healthier living for members of special populations. For example, American Indians and Alaska Natives have higher rates of diabetes compared to other racial and ethnic groups as well as the lowest rates of Internet use. With the current wave of development of web sites and other digital technologies to eliminate health disparities, it is important to ensure that developers are producing culturally appropriate and user friendly products. Objective 11.1 of Healthy People 2010 defines meaningful access as “encompass[ing] all the factors that make an Internet connection valuable, such as basic computer literacy, ongoing technical support, and Web content of interest.” This session will focus on current e-health tools that are being used to improve the health of American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian populations. Speakers will provide evidence on how these populations are using eHealth tools, what are their lessons learned in developing culturally appropriate and user friendly eHealth tools, and what are the health benefits of providing access to culturally appropriate and user-specific eHealth tools.
Learning Objectives: 1. Understand how technology can be used in providing health care services to remote American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian populations. 2. Participate in interactive demonstrations of culturally appropriate eHealth tools to improve the health of American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians. 3. Identify ways to improve access to eHealth tools for special populations.
