In this session, contributors to Terrorism and Public Health (Oxford University Press in cooperation with APHA, 2003) and others will make presentations on current issues related to prevention of, preparation for, and response to terrorism, defined as "politically motivated violence or the threat of violence, especially against civilians, with the intent to instill fear." Presentations will address the legal and public health consequences of policies that restrict civil liberties and have been linked to the use of torture and/or deprivation of other human rights; the effectiveness of bioterrorism preparedness and other measures to prevent and prepare for terrorist attacks; and the emerging nuclear capabilities of Iran, North Korea, and other countries and the terrorist threats that these developments might pose.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the session participants will be able to recognize the consequences to public health, civil liberties, and human rights of the "war on terrorism" and to analyze measures being advocated to prevent and prepare for terrorist attacks.
