This session presents recommendations and strategies to involve African American community and faith based organizations in preventing and coping with natural disasters and other emergency preparedness issues. African Americans suffered disproportionately during the recent Katrina Hurricane disaster. Thousands of families lost their homes, livelihoods, access to education, and access to health care. Many Katrina survivors have turned to community and small faith based organizations for help, guidance, information and support. Faith-based and community organizers and leaders will be invited to share their experiences working with Katrina survivors. Summary findings from a medical and service needs assessment will be presented. This session will address the preparedness and response needs of African American communities and will offer innovative and practical strategies for federal, state, and local preparedness planners, and for the general public health community. | |||
Learning Objectives: 1. Identify emergency preparedness and response needs of African Americans; 2. Describe ways in which community and faith based organizations support and extend federal and state and philanthropic efforts in response to the Katrina disaster; 3. Understand specific concerns of African Americans regarding adequacy of federal preparedness and response efforts; 4.
