Strategies for Integrating Environmental Health Into Nursing Education and Public Health Nursing
The importance of integrating environmental health into the nursing curriculum and into public health nursing has been recognized for over 10 years. The 1995 IOM report on Nursing, Health and the Environment explicitly highlighted this need. Building upon the IOM report, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in collaboration with the National Institute for Nursing Research and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry convened the Nursing and Environmental Health Roundtable in 2002, which among other key recommendations, highlights the necessity for improving integration of environmental health into curricula. Educating and training nurses in environmental health is essential to improving and protecting public health. In addition, it builds the next generation of nurse researchers, of which there are very few. This session will describe the efforts of four Community Outreach and Education Programs located at environmental health research centers funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Presenters will discuss their approaches to integrating environmental health into nursing education and into public health nursing. They will highlight the benefits and impacts of their work and address the challenges they face. They will describe how the Community Outreach and Education Program enhances their ability to accomplish their work.
Learning Objectives: Participants will learn about several strategies for infusing environmental health into nursing programs. Participants will learn how Community Outreach and Education Programs provide a valuable link between nurses and environmental health scientists. Participants will learn more about the critical role of nurses in environmental health to protect and improve public health.
