Smoking accounts for one out of every five deaths in the United States. It is the most important modifiable cause of premature death, responsible annually for an estimated 5 million years of potential life lost. Although smoking has declined in the past three decades, 25% of adults in the U.S. continue to smoke. Health care providers have both the opportunity and professional obligation to modify smoking behavior and address nicotine dependency in their patients. | |||
