Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview: | |||
This institute will present a half-day workshop on youth advocacy as a tobacco control strategy and will review the state of the art of evaluating youth advocacy programs. The presenters have recently completed a four year evaluation of a National Education Association Health Information Network youth advocacy program to promote a tobacco free society. Participants will learn an advocacy model and how to use the advocacy curriculum and well as how to develop instruments to evaluate advocacy programs. The presenters will also include information from a conference on youth advocacy held in March 2003 that was sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. | |||

Presentation and discussion of theoretical basis for an advocacy strategy and use of an example of a four step youth advocacy model to promote a tobacco free society - Sparks | |||
Disucssion of curriculum standards for advocacy in health education and the current environment school-based, after-school and/or community programs for youth advocacy - Sparks | |||
Brief discussion of the role of a teacher or youth coordinator in assisting youth to development advocacy plans. Participants then design an advocacy program and develop action plans and evaluation plans | |||
