Community-Based Participatory Research (Part 2): Working with Communities to Interpret and Analyze Data and Get to Outcomes
Partnership:Community-Based Public Health Caucus
Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The purpose of this Institute is to help participants who are familiar with and possibly have some experience in community based participatory research (CBPR) deepen their understanding of and skills related to collaborative data analysis and use of findings as part of the CBPR process. We have elected to focus on data analysis/interpretation and use of findings--particularly as related to policy change--because this area has been explored least and requires careful thought. Among the key questions to be addressed are: How do we facilitate and ensure community/outside researcher co-ownership of findings? How do we get from data collection to collaborative data analysis? How do we organize different types of data with community members? Why might we select one data collection approach as opposed to another? How do we move from findings to policy and other action outcomes? The Institute will use case studies, each of which employs different data collection approaches, i.e., survey, focus group, secondary data, and mapping to teach skills related to data analysis and action/policy change implementation. Values and processes that permeate and define CBPR will be featured throughout. Participants will: a) review key principles of the participatory research approach, b) learn about issues involved in selecting a particular data collection method, c) understand how to move from data to interpretaion and findings, and d) become knowledgeable about how to work within the partnership to share data and findings in a community setting. Finally, e) they will learn how to identify the potential action outcomes, including policy implications of findings using a collaborative approach.
