Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The purpose of this Institute to promote the effective use of health survey outcomes research which is being used increasingly in public health prevention, screening and health education programs. Increasingly public databases and surveys are using questionnaires to report the health of various populations for the purpose of developing and evaluating public health programs and for monitoring the health of populations. In addition, national surveys such as the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) contain an increasing amount of data collected from self- and interview- administered questionnaires that are used for prioritizing public health issues. Over the past twenty years, the exponential growth in the research areas of health status, mental health, quality-of-life and patient satisfaction assessment as part of health monitoring and educational programs in tobacco, alcohol, and substance abuse has led to a demand for analytically skilled public health workers. Questionnaire data must be analyzed with an appreciation for the measurement and psychometric issues required for scale development and analysis. In addition, since many questionnaires yield multiple scales and indices, an awareness and understanding of the appropriate multivariable analysis methods is extremely important. This course is designed to give public health researchers and practitioners a foundation in measurement and psychometrics for the purpose of collecting, analyzing and interpreting data obtained from questionnaires.
