Asthma is a significant public health issue. This session features a range of initiatives to improve asthma education, management, and surveillance as well as research about asthma risk factors. We will hear about innovative education and intervention programs in Puerto Rico linking air quality, asthma patients and their families, schools, community health workers, government and non-profit organizations; an educational campaign in California to raise awareness about environmental triggers of asthma and to develop and implement public health and policy inventions; a novel public health asthma surveillance system in Boston using data from community health centers; and research about the association between weather and air pollution with asthma.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: 1) identify and develop innovative approaches to asthma education and intervention; 2) describe the use of data, media and other communication tools to inform advocacy and interventions related to environmental triggers of asthma; 3) understand opportunities and limitations of using registries for asthma surveillance; and 4) understand the asthma risk associated with weather and air pollution.
