Children: The First To Bear The Brunt Of Environmental Contamination
Children have heightened vulnerability to toxicants in their environment. This session will describe a variety of programs designed to identify and address children’s environmental health concerns. An evaluation of the Pediatric Environmental Tool Kit, designed to assist health care providers in incorporating environmental health guidance into practice will be presented. Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units (PEHSU) program efforts to provide education, consultation, and outreach on children’s environmental health concerns will be highlighted including a snapshot of issues addressed in the Region 6 (NM, TX, LA, OK, and AR) PEHSU from January – February 2005. Lastly, results from an investigation of potential teratogenic effects of lead exposure in a Texas-funded Parkland Memorial Hospital study of current and past residents of smelter neighborhoods in 2002 will be shared.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: -Recognize key environmental threats to children's health. - Identify tools and programs that can identify, address and prevent environmental health threats to children - describe the evidence for teratogenic effects of lead, arsenic, cadmium, and other smelter-associated substances on children
