The first three of the five papers being presented in this session will focus on the environmental health challenges faced by communities in the US and in Pakistan: the toxic slag waste that leached into the bay in Ruston, Washington, USA; poultry litter resulting in increased arsenic levels in drinking water in the Eastern shores of Maryland, USA; and wastewater used in irrigation that affects drinking water in Haroonabad, Pakistan. Subsequently, they will offer some community-based solutions to address these problems. The fourth paper evaluates the effectiveness of primary lead prevention in homes in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and highlights the problems of low cost lead hazard control strategies. Finally, the last paper will highlight an EPA initiative that provides funding to build capacity in the community to address environmental health challenges.
Learning Objectives: 1. Gain an understanding of the public health challenges of industrial waste. 2. Highlight solutions proposed by communities to address environmental health challenges and also inform participants about some of the drawbacks of adopting low cost hazard control. 3. Identify processes for enhancing the capacity in communities.
