| Risk communication and risk perception has been increasingly used to improve the capacity of health professionals to understand the population and communities with whom they are working and to communicate and design interventions and programs that take into consideration racial, socioeconomic and cultural perceptions. During this session, participants will learn how perceptions impact environmental public health tracking and interventions. In addition, participants will learn how risk communication is used to address environmental health concerns. Four studies will highlight issues including the perceptions of the effect of environmental conditions on health outcomes in New Orleans; how to identify environmental health concerns in fenceline and non-fenceline communities in Louisiana; how to identify and mediate air quality health concerns using risk communication techniques; and strategies to improve drinking water-related health concerns by improving the capacity of water utility, local public health and clinical practitioners. | |||
| Learning Objectives: 1. Discuss four studies conducted to look at perceptions and communication strategies to address various communities concerns about health impacts from environmental factors including air contamination and water quality. 2. Recognize two cases highlighting racial differences in perception of the effect of environmental factors, including proximity to contamination, disease incidence, to health outcomes and identifying the degrees of concerns among fenceline communities and non-fenceline communities. 3. Describe strategies to effectively educate and communicate with the health care community and general public to address air and water-related health concerns. | |||
