Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The purpose of this Institute is to connect the dots between conventional development in the built environment and adverse public health impact. It will discuss and propose evidence-based prescriptive solutions through effective master planning, sustainable architecture, alternative transportation modes and infrastructure development, and urban forestry. Research increasingly shows relationships between urban form, auto-dependence, physical inactivity, overweight, obesity and morbidity. Land-use mix, network connectivity, street design, site design, and appropriate residential and employment density have been found to be modifiable built environment factors that positively influence health and increase activity. Accessibility, neighborhood perception and aesthetics, and elements of safety have been identified as additional factors. The question to be addressed is what combinations of these factors can be packaged or prescribed in the planning and design process to reduce chronic disease outcomes associated with conventional design and development in the built environment. Over time, answers to these questions will lead to a new paradigm of prescriptive planning and design and have far reaching implications for public health practice and urban development.
