Focused on the role of labor physicians in identifying health hazards, this session highlights the careers and contributions of two seminal figures in occupational and environmental health: Drs Lorin Kerr and Irving Selikoff. Presentations will address their achievements, including identifying hazards, raising public awareness, and championing legislation and controls, as well as more stringent standards. The key role of organized labor in their work will be analyzed and discussed. The session will also address the contribution of occupational health physicians to building a better OSHA, along with the role of organized labor in balancing the scales in occupational medicine in a world of conflicting interests. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to: 1)Describe and discuss the work of Lorin Kerr, MD, with the United Mine Workers of America and his contribution to occupational health and safety. 2)Describe and discuss Dr. Irving Selikoff's contribution to the development of occupational health and safety, including his research approach. 3)Analyze and discuss the role of occupational physicians in building a better OSHA. 4)Describe and discuss the contribution of professional societies and groups like the Association of Occupational and Environmental Health Clinics to the practice of occupational medicine. 5)Analyze and discuss the role of organized labor in occupational medicine. | |||
