This session will review the results of four interrelated studies about Medicare's efforts to publicly report comparative hospital quality information and to promote its use by consumers and health professionals to stimulate quality improvement in hospitals. The first study describes tests of alternative presentation options for comparative hospital quality data with health professionals and consumers in preparation for the launch of Medicare's Hospital Compare web site in March 2005. The second study describes the development and testing a new survey for measuring patient perceptions of and experiences with hospital care. The third study describes how recent changes in physician group practices impacts the way physicians serve as information intermediaries for consumers. The fourth study presents initial finding from a nationally representative survey of hospital quality improvement directors and chief medical officers regarding the impact of public reporting on hospital QI programs.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will be able to list key issues that need to be addressed when developing similar quality reporting campaigns and to identify barriers to successfully implementing such campaigns.
